Project description

The remodeling of the architecture department’s foyer in the Marlowe building was a Kent University student project, under the guidance of Jef Smith at MELD Architecture.

Our brief was to create a youthful, vibrant space within a building used frequently for prominent design presentations and seminars. As well as providing new café space and completely opening up the façade, we fitted a new continuous timber wall covering/ceiling, a system we have never used before.

 The project involved:

  • Introducing full-height external sliding doors.

  • A timber slatted wall with coloured niches for displaying architectural models.

  • Replacing the steps to the front entrance and with a continuous level access ramp.

  • A new kitchen servery.

The project was opened for the summer term on schedule, on budget and to a very discerning group of users who were delighted with the finished space.
